The Dental Examination
Before any work is carried out a thorough examination is performed. First a physical examination of external features is done. Checking for any lumps, abnormal facial swellings, objectionable odour and/or any nasal discharge. Then once the horse or pony is fully relaxed a full-mouth speculum is placed on, it is gently and quietly opened to allow access to the oral cavity. Using a head light a visual check is done once the mouth has been rinsed out. Incisors, any canines or wolf teeth are inspected and finally the molars are checked. An equine dental chart is written and a explanation of the work needed done is given to the owner.
Traditionally floating or rasping teeth has always been done using file type tools. Now more and more work is done using power tools, which allows higher standards of work to be done and is kinder to the horse's mouth.
On the day of the appointment payment is asked for once the work has been completed. The costs involved depend on the work needed plus also the distance travelled to reach the appointment. Please contact me at any time for a quote.
